NMC Changes will Benefit Over 500 Newly Qualified Australian Nurses and Midwives who Want to Work in the NHS

Ask a Director of Nursing in the NHS what their single biggest recruitment challenge is, and more often than not the answer is sourcing, recruiting and retaining Band 5 Nurses.

Therefore, the announcement by the UK’s Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) on 25 September 2018 that overseas nurses and midwives will be able to apply to work in the UK immediately after qualifying, is very welcome news for NHS Trusts.

No doubt the news will also be welcomed by the hundreds of newly qualified Australian nurses and midwives that NHS Trusts met at the British Nursing Job Fairs in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane  in November 2017 and June 2018.

Stephen McLarnon, Chief Executive of HealthSectorJobs and organiser of the British Nursing Job Fairs in Australia knows first-hand the impact this will have for both employers and nurses: “We have a database of over 500 newly qualified nurses and midwives in Australia who want to work in the UK, but given the NMC’s requirement that nurses from outside the EU must have worked for at least 12 months after qualifying, our clients couldn’t recruit these nurses and midwives at the time”. McLarnon adds: “This is a game-changer and will provide much needed supply of Band 5 nurses and midwives to the  NHS”.

The British Nursing Job Fair is the only event of its kind exclusively for NHS Trusts to directly source and recruit nurses and midwives in overseas markets. The announcement in June 2018 by Home Secretary Sajid Javid that non-EU/EEA nurses are to be excluded from the current immigration cap has resulted in a surge in demand from employers to take part in our upcoming job fairs in Australia.

The British Nursing Job Fair Schedule:

  • Melbourne, Australia: 2 March 2019
  • Sydney, Australia: 6 March 2019
  • Brisbane, Australia: 9 March 2019
  • Perth, Australia: 13 March 2019

The British Nursing Job Fair in Australia is capped at just 10 employers and is expected to sell out in October 2018. The dates have been brought forward to March 2019 from June 2019, given the demand from employers to make the trip Down Under.
